History

The Residential School system was built to solve the "Indian problem" in Canada to eliminate the perceived threat and barrier posed by Indigenous Peoples to the development of the newly forming nation of Canada.

The schools aimed to eliminate Indigenous cultures, languages, and identities. Residential Schools were operated through a partnership between the Canadian government and religious organizations. They existed from 1831 to 1996.

Residential Schools disrupted communities, families, and the lives of individuals. Their impacts are still being felt today.
